The Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK), Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin assured that the issue of subsidized cooking oil or 1 kilogram (kg) pack supply will end in within one to two weeks.
According to him, the shortage of cooking oil supply is due to panic buying by consumers and hoarding of the controlled item by irresponsible parties.
“Arrests made so far is due to these hoarding activities.
“However, the people have realized that there is no need for them to go into panic mode in buying cooking oil,” he said while monitoring the cooking oil supply around Klang, today.
With regards to the decrease in the supply of cooking oil, Hamzah said the country produced cooking oil more than required namely 85,000 metric tonnes a month, while the people in this country only uses about one and a half kilograms of oil a month.
He said, with 30 million people in this country, around 45,000 metric tonnes of cooking oil is needed in a month.
“Meaning, it is enough for the people, there is no need for them to panic.
“Each factory produces 200 cartons of cooking oil in a day while in a month it is estimated 50,000 cartons are produced,” he said.
Hamzah, explained the process to produced recycled cooking oil is more expensive than RM2.50 and the manufacturers are not making any profit.
He further said, propaganda is created by certain parties and it triggered panic buying with regards to bottled cooking oil.
“They end up getting mad at the government because the price is higher from what we normally give,” he said.
Earlier, Hamzah conducted a surprise inspection at Pasar Besar Meru and cooking oil wholesalers around the area.
The inspection which started at 9 am were joined by relate agencies such as the Immigration Department, The Companies Commission of Malaysia and Klang Municipal Council.
It is understood that the surprised inspection is conducted due to complaints of foreign sellers at the market apart from inspecting the sale of cooking oil by the wholesalers.
